Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been at war since April 2023. This page records what has been reported, who reported it, and how sure we are. We check it once a day while the fighting continues.

- The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF is in its fourth year. Aid workers estimate it has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced more than 13 million. Counts vary widely and none is verified.
- The RSF has held all of Darfur since it took El Fasher on 26 October 2025. The fighting has since centred on Kordofan, between Darfur and central Sudan.
- In Kordofan, the army has the upper hand in the north, the RSF in the west, and South Kordofan remains contested, Al Jazeera reports.
- RSF drone strikes continue on El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan. The army says it has taken the RSF's largest stronghold in North Kordofan. That claim is not independently confirmed.
- The World Food Programme says 20 million people face acute hunger and 200,000 are at the starvation level of the IPC scale, the global hunger-rating system.
- There are no direct talks between the army and the RSF. The United States is pushing for a 90-day humanitarian truce.
The fronts
North Kordofan and El Obeid

The army has held the reopened Khartoum to El Obeid corridor and towns it retook in late July. The RSF keeps contesting the corridor and striking El Obeid with drones. On 1 October a drone strike on a University of Kordofan dormitory killed five people and wounded 47, the Sudan Doctors Network said. The RSF did not comment. An army source says the army retook al-Mazroub on 2 October. We have not confirmed that. The UN says more than 300,000 people have been displaced from Kordofan since the RSF took El Fasher, Arab News reported.

South Kordofan
ReportedContested.
South Kordofan remains contested, Al Jazeera reports. The Sudan Doctors Network last month accused the RSF-allied SPLM-N, a rebel movement, of an artillery attack on the town of Dilling. The World Food Programme condemned a 30 August strike on food trucks near Dilling that destroyed more than 50 metric tons of food.

Darfur
ConfirmedHeld by the RSF since October 2025.
The RSF took El Fasher on 26 October 2025 after an 18-month siege and now controls all of Darfur. A UN-backed review confirmed famine in El Fasher and in Kadugli, South Kordofan, in November 2025.

The drone war
ReportedBoth sides use drones. Civilians are being hit.
A UN fact-finding mission reported on 3 September that foreign-supplied drones strengthen both the RSF and the army. It said repeated RSF drone strikes on El Obeid between July and August may amount to war crimes. A separate strike near a courthouse in Umm Rawaba, North Kordofan, killed 13 civilians, according to the Security Council Report.

Hunger and displacement

The World Food Programme's acting director said on 14 September that 20 million people face acute hunger, 14 million are displaced and 200,000 are at the starvation level of the IPC scale. Human Rights Watch says both sides have wilfully obstructed aid.

Diplomacy and sanctions
ReportedNo direct talks. A truce push is under way.
The United States says it is working with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey and European partners on a new humanitarian truce push. The Quad, made up of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the US, is divided. The UN Security Council extended its Sudan sanctions regime to 9 October and is expected to vote on a longer extension this month. The US withheld a visa for army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to attend the UN General Assembly, Reuters and other outlets reported.

What we cannot verify
- Who actually holds al-Mazroub. The army says it took the town. We have no independent confirmation.
- How many people have died. Estimates range from tens of thousands to more than 200,000, and no count is verified.
- Whether the RSF launches drones from Ethiopian territory. Sudan's army says so. Ethiopia denies it.
- How much foreign fighters and weapons have changed the war beyond what the UN fact-finding mission documented.
- Whether any direct talks are under way. Reporting says there are none.
- Conditions inside besieged or isolated towns in South Kordofan such as Dilling and Kadugli.

The army said it captured al-Mazroub, which an army source called the RSF's largest stronghold in North Kordofan. A spokesman said the town links North and West Kordofan and that taking it advances the aim of cutting RSF supply lines.
